"I Am Still Right Here With You"

I Am Still Right Here With You

If it seems like I am far away,
On an overwhelming or difficult day,
Just touch your heart and know it's true,
I am still right here with you.

On the best days of your life with news to share,
If you find yourself wishing I was there,
Just touch your heart and know it's true,
I am still right here with you.

If sadness fills your mind and tears fill your eyes,
Remember the good times, remember the highs,
Just touch your heart and know it's true,
I am still right here with you.

In moments where it feels like everything is wrong,
Remember always: you are strong,
Just touch your heart and know it's true,
I am still right here with you.

When nighttime falls and the day is done,
if you're feeling alone and sleep won't come,
Just touch your heart and know it's true,
I am still right here with you.

I wrote this poem a few days after my mom passed away, and it was used on the memorial card distributed at the funeral home. The harsh reality of the brief 9.5 weeks between Mom's diagnosis and death left no room for discussions about life without her. Even though the topic remained untouched, I like to believe that the sentiments expressed in this poem echo the advice my mom would have shared.

This memorial card has found a permanent place on my desk and bedside table. During moments when I truly wish Mom could be with me, I carry it around. The longing for Mom's presence is overwhelming, but I find comfort in the fact that she resides eternally in my heart, my thoughts, and my memories.
